Elizabeth Miraglia, LICSW

I specialize in psychodynamic therapy — an approach that draws connections between your past and present, illuminating the patterns that shape how you relate to yourself and others. While cognitive approaches work well for some, others find that understanding a problem intellectually isn't enough to change how they feel. Psychodynamic therapy goes deeper, exploring what lies beneath the surface.

I hold a Master of Social Work in Clinical Social Work from the Smith College School for Social Work. My training spans homeless services, inpatient psychiatry, youth work, and street outreach. I also bring an educational background in philosophy, with a focus on the studies of mind, language, science, and religion.

I completed a fellowship at the Psychodynamic Couples and Family Institute of New England and am a member of the Northeastern Society for Group Psychotherapy. I participate in ongoing supervision and continuing education to deepen my clinical expertise.

I became a therapist because I love being with people and learning from them. Therapy offers the opportunity to understand who you are and to build a relationship with yourself. I'm here to facilitate that unique relationship.

How Psychodynamic Therapy Works

Relational & Depth-Oriented

I work relationally, creating space for honesty, humor, and validation. Rather than prescribing solutions, I challenge assumptions and thinking patterns while honoring that you are the expert on your own life. The therapeutic relationship itself becomes a vehicle for growth.

Past Informing Present

Past experiences shape how we see ourselves and relate to others, but we determine the meaning of our own experiences. Psychodynamic therapy draws connections between past and present, revealing the parallel struggles that keep us stuck — and opening new pathways forward.

Compassion & Healthy Skepticism

I combine fierce compassion with healthy skepticism, focusing first on building a trusting relationship between us. I approach our differences with curiosity, respect, and humility, learning from our work together and growing as a clinician and person.

Beyond Surface-Level Solutions

While some people benefit from cognitive-behavioral methods, others find that "knowing" the answer isn't enough. Psychodynamic therapy goes deeper — exploring what dwells beneath your feelings and helping you cultivate a strong sense that you are capable of change and deserving of goodness.

Build a Deeper Relationship with Yourself

Our past experiences inform our present — they shape how we see ourselves, the world around us, and how we relate to others. However, you determine the meaning of your own experiences, and everyone's narrative is different.

My approach involves addressing your existential concerns alongside unhealed internal wounds. Together we will examine your relationship patterns and work to replace what no longer serves you with a fresh perspective and new skills.

My hope is that through our work together, you cultivate a strong sense that you are capable of change and deserving of goodness.

Navigate Relationships with Understanding

Every close relationship includes each individual and the space between them. That space can be a playground for honesty, compassion, and understanding — but there are times when miscommunication and misinterpretation take hold.

Everyone brings a unique set of past experiences and survival skills to their relationships. We all face the challenge of loving someone through difference, leading each other through the woods again and again.

I work with every type of couple, including those involved non-romantically — friends, siblings, or parent and adult child. I am especially interested in working with LGBTQIA+ individuals and couples, and those in interfaith relationships.

Common Questions About Therapy

What is psychodynamic therapy?
Psychodynamic therapy works by drawing connections between your past and present experiences, highlighting the struggles that run parallel to one another. Unlike approaches like CBT that focus primarily on changing thought patterns, psychodynamic therapy takes a deeper look into what lies beneath your feelings — helping you understand recurring relationship patterns and resolve unhealed internal wounds.
Do you accept health insurance?
I do not currently accept insurance directly. However, I offer sliding scale pricing based on your income and provide superbills — detailed receipts that you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Please reach out during your free consultation to discuss pricing options.
Are sessions in-person or virtual?
All therapy sessions are conducted virtually via secure telehealth. This means anyone who resides in the state of Massachusetts can access therapy from the comfort and privacy of their own home. No commute, no waiting room — just meaningful therapeutic work.
Is your practice LGBTQIA+ affirming?
Yes, absolutely. I am committed to creating a safe, affirming therapeutic space for LGBTQIA+ individuals and couples. I am especially interested in working with LGBTQIA+ clients and those in interfaith relationships. All group therapy sessions are LGBTQIA+ inclusive as well.
What types of couples do you work with?
I work with every type of couple, not just romantic partners. This includes friends, siblings, parent and adult child, and any other close relational pair. My couples work is LGBTQIA+ affirming, and I welcome interfaith partnerships as well.
How do I know if psychodynamic therapy is right for me?
If you've found that knowing the "answer" to a problem isn't enough to change how you feel, psychodynamic therapy may be a great fit. This approach is especially helpful for people who notice recurring patterns in their relationships, want to understand the deeper roots of their emotions, or feel that something beneath the surface is holding them back. The best way to find out is to schedule a free 15-minute consultation.
How do group therapy sessions work?
Before joining a group, each participant completes an individual intake session ($90) so we can determine fit and prepare you for the group experience. Groups meet weekly at $45 per session. Enrollment is on a rolling basis with a minimum four-week commitment, and you're welcome to stay as long as you need. Groups are kept intentionally small to foster meaningful connection.
